Optimizing Public Spaces in Architectural Education: A Case Study of Atma Jaya Yogyakarta University, Campus 2

Generational differences shape the use of public spaces in architectural education, both indoor and outdoor, reflecting varied behaviors, needs, and perspectives. Educational facilities function as real-world design laboratories, yet their utilization is influenced by a generational gap across four age groups. These differences in spatial preferences and connectivity create diverse patterns of use, requiring adaptive design strategies. This study investigates generational gaps in the utilization of indoor public spaces at Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta (UAJY) and evaluates spatial connectivity through Space Syntax analysis, including Connectivity Convex Space Analysis and Axial Line by Pixel. Data were collected via online questionnaires and Conceptboard-based participation to capture perceptions across age groups, combined with spatial connectivity analysis to assess interaction patterns based on accessibility and visibility. Findings reveal that younger generations tend to occupy high-connectivity zones with strong visual accessibility, represented by red/orange areas in Space Syntax analysis. In contrast, older generations prefer low-connectivity and lower-visibility spaces, marked by blue/purple zones. These results highlight the importance of Space Syntax-driven strategies to improve visual connectivity, spatial flexibility, and generational adaptation. The study provides a foundation for redesigning public spaces to be more inclusive and responsive to evolving academic interactions.
